St. Rose Presentation Day~

Hello Hello! So our St. Rose presentation was yesterday and I think we did pretty well! We all were so cluttered. The group came to my house at 7:30 when I requested them to come at 6:00. So Vanessa came and all my work dropped therefore my cue cards were NOT in order and we had to leave quickly so I just grabbed em and tried to remember where goes where. Julie and Shilah and Jessica rehearsed quickly and we ran to the school. We saw the principal and he let us get ready. We were in the gym setting up and we all rehearsed quickly and when we did, we had an extra half hour left O: OMG our presentation was 30mins. too short SO we decided to talk REALLY SLOW. So the school called the students down and our presentation started. We were all too cluttered, especially me. I was messy. I thought i'd just wing my part and I did.

The order of the presentation was as follows: 1.Shilah: Introduction 2. Justinne and Shilah: Poverty 3. Julie Do: Hunger 4. Vanessa: HIV/Aids 5. Janie: Universal Education 6. Ginelle: Gender Equality 7. Monica and Jessica: Child Mortality. SO Shilah did her part great and she took up only 5 minutes and then it was Julie's turn and she took up like 7 minutes and we had only a few more topics next and we had filled so far only 15 minutes. YUP, we were screwed. Vanessa's part was very nice. It took 10 minutes and people reacted to her part the best. Her facts were stunning. They really made people think. I've seen her present once and i'm still affected and hurt at stuff she said. He videos of the Orphans were the worst. I saw some kids look amazed and sad and look down. I'm happy that people are more aware because we came. I'll admit. We were pretty damn good. Next was me.

I froze & said 'ummmmmm' probably 600 times. Even my group members were mocking me when I finished. I had said all i had. I took a LOOOONG time on purpose and I found a last minute video at home in the morning and I never even watched it so I didn't even know if it was disgusting or unappropriate. I'm lucky it was because then the school would've killed me. AHAAHHAHAH. LUCKY ME. My part took a little over 13 minutes so we had enough time anyway.  Ginelle parts was one I never looked thoguh & it was really good. I learned so much new things! It really was cool because I am a girl and she was talking about how girls are restricted to ALOT of things and how they are treated so unfairly! It really was interesting since I myself am a woman. Monica and Jessica's part was cool too. I learned that a child dies every 3.6 seconds ): SO SAD ): that means i could have dies long time ago. I got depressed. Jessica's part was cut off though because we ran out of time. LOL we said we had almost 30 minutes of extra time but infact we needed about 10 more minutes. Jessica couldn't show the best part of her part and Monica's best section is now unknown to St. Rose. The conclusion or 'closing'  of our presentation was the BEST part. seriously. We quote Sauer words about when he saw Rwandan War news, all he said was 'Awe, too bad', it really was the most touching part but the whole presentation. Too bad those kids will never know. I wanted to quote it because some people looked bored in the presentation D:

Outsourcing

Outsourcing is when a company or organization works outside in country to work in a foreign country to purchase goods or subcontract services from an outside supplier or source. If that definition confused you like it did me, then this one will help you understand better. Outsourcing means to contract out jobs or  services, etc. For example: A small business that outsources fast foods to an accounting firm.

There’re many small and big companies that outsource their low end as well as high end services to off-shore destinations like India, China, Philippines, Russia etc. Few companies outsource, such as IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, Cisco, Prudential, Hewlett Packard, ATT Wireless, TransUnion, First Consulting Group (FCG), Dell Computer Support, Bell South, EDS, GE Capital, GE, IBM, Schlumberger, Qwest and Rand McNally.

In social class we had also watched this series made by the same guy that did ” Super Size Me” Morgan Spurlock. This series is called ‘30 days’. Though I’ve seen Super ‘Size Me’ at school a billion times whether it was in school or at home, I’ve never heard of this show till Alger showed us.The episode that we were watching in Social, was about a man who was a computer technician guy that had lost his job due to outsourcing in India. So Morgan Spurlock convinced the man to travel to India and experience the life of his former job in an outsourced country for 30 days. He did go to India and had lived in a family of outsourced workers which they had gave him details on the perspective of being a technician in America compared to India. This was surprising because in America being a computer technician isn’t something to be proud of because it is listed as one of the lowest jobs, but in India they have people that’re proud and willing to get the job. This film it gave me a little more to think about how people are being affected by outsourcing. The man that lost his job only wanted to live the same life as his parents, but after losing his job he doubts it. This world was meant for people to enjoy life and have a better life than their parents but due to companies wanting to spend less and more profit, people are losing their jobs.

Webinar Against Diamonds

What’s my new favorite movie? BLOOD DIAMOND. This movie changed my view on diamonds. The once beautiful stone of natural mineral is now a horrible stone of evilllllll. I was really touched by this movie. Seriously. It was so amazing. I can’t get over the fact that this was a reality for some people. Child soilders. Kids hold guns and kill people, they gamble and drink. The only time I drank was in grade 4 when I accidently ate that box of chocolate with rum inside and the only time I gambled was when I played cards for candy and I’ve only had a toy gun before. This movie was about the illicit trade, the illegal trade of diamonds. It showed how some diamonds are REALLY found. Leonardo de Caprio looked like a mugger. He was very attractive in Titanic though. When the father was talking to his son, a child solider, I got sooo sad. It was just crazy. It was so deep and inspiring.

The social and L.A. 10-honours students participated in a webinar with people around the world. This webinar was to discuss issues and ways we can decrease climate change, we were able to see views from people in Cancun, Israel, Texas and other parts of Canada. It was so boring. I’m sorry to say that this webinar was a waste of time. The Texans were so rude! They got up and made funny faces, fooled around and kept making so much noise the whole time the man from Israel was talking and then they all just left the classroom. I really wouldn’t mind having their teacher. That however was the most exciting part of the webinar, talking to the Texans. They were stereotypes and they asked “Do you listen to Lil Wayne?” WOW. We were stuck with them for a while however. They DID mention climate change. ONCE. When they asked about the weather in Calgary and asked what we would suggest they do in Texas to stop climate change. They said some pretty rude things to us, like “Your mom” I wanted to fight back but Ms. Ponce held us back from fighting for our prideeee. Honestly, we wasted 2 periods. I paid attention to the Australians but not really anything else, because everything else was pretty irrelevant. We were talking to the man from Israel and I couldn’t hear a thing. It was too noisy and I couldn’t understand him, He was talking too fast for me to type things in time, I think I didn’t learn much either. We talked about the basic things that were pretty obvious. It was pretty interesting. The Australians were very informative and they helped me learn a few things I didn’t know before. They cleared a few cloudy facts I had. I learned some new stuff. But the background for him was too noisy thus I couldn’t make out most of what he said.

Race Against Time. Some parts were good and make me want to keep reading but honestly most parts made me just want to shoot myself in the head. I had to read a paragraph over at least 2 times because I kept zoning out of the story every few words. IT WAS SO BORING however very informative. The UN laid out a series of eight goals meant to guide humankind in the new century in 2000. It was called the Millennium Development Goals; these targets are to be met by 2015 and are to lay the foundation for a prosperous future. In "Race Against Time, Stephen Lewis advances real solutions to help societies across the globe achieve the Millennium Goals. Through in depth explanations, he shows how dreams such as universal primary education, a successful war against the AIDS, and environmental sustainability, are our grasp. It’s a powerful testimony.

Mustard Seed, NOT an exclusive hot dog shop.

On this beautiful Sunday morning, I went to volunteer at the drop-in center with the school. I didn’t listen to most of the talking therefore went to the mustard seed drop-out donations by accident. There were two mustard seed centers and so I recalled Mr. Alger saying something about dropbox’s and I picked the center that said ‘ Mustard Seed Drop Out Donation center’. “Close enough” I said to myself. I went in and the people greeted me happily and asked if I was there for lunch. Hmm, they asked me if I CAME TO THE MUSTARD SEED FOR LUNCH. Yeah boost on my self esteem. Did I look like a hobo? I sure hope not -____-“ Anyway, I followed her to her office and I told them about me coming to serve food. They looked confused and asked me if I was the owner of the restaurant who donated the food. I was suuppppper confused. Then I talked about Father Lacombe and they were super confused. Anyways, after a lot of explaining and calling, I realized I was in the wrong place. I was supposed to be at a Calgary drop-in center. So the people gave me an address and I went to some place called ‘Calgary drop-in and Rehab center’.  Anyway, I saw Keyva and Latoya who were also too scared to go in so we went together and then we went upstairs and met everyone.

So much people came that Ms. Ponce had to leave because she didn’t expect so many of us to show up. My first experience volunteering at a homeless shelter. I wanted to serve food, but I came too late, so I had the duty of a bus person. A bus person is one who collects the kitchenware after they are done eating. I had to wait awhile because people were still serving food when I arrived. I chilled out with autumn and rizamel ponce and jamal. After, when we got to work, me and rizamel worked together. The pople were… interesting. There were some weridos and some people who looked like they didn’t even belong there. This one guy had branded EVERYTHING. His shoes were the new high tops nike thhhat my   brother wanted very much but my mom said too expensive, and he was wearing dolce glasses. It was werid. I enjoyed my time volunteering. What was nice was when we were leaving, the people clapped for us. It surprised me. Some people I still remember, like that guy who didn’t even touch his food and he put it in our bucket.

And this other guy who wanted more so when I asked if he was done, he took some leftover bread from my bucket that was DIRTY and soaked with orange juice. I didn’t like how so much food was wasted. I mean people donated this and they got it for free, I don’t get why they couldn’t at least saved it for later. I had fun and it only took about 30minutes. I wanted it to be longer though. I was enjoying this. Volunteering was a fun thing, I think I will do it again when an opportunity comes up. I wouldn't mind helping almost everyday but then the same question comes up again. HOW TO START? Where do I start? Whom do I ask? So since I thought this was fun and would very much like a chance to do it again, but never did it before because was never given the opportunity. I wonder if a majority of the world is like me. If they also just need a little shove to start off helping the world. I mean, I would’ve helped the homeless looooooooong time ago if someone just showed me how. If people just knew how or where to start then I guess many people would be helping too.

The first photo: Is the rehab center that i was SUPPOSED to go to, the second photo: what I want to be doing, the third: is the mustard seed drop-out donations that I went to, fourth: is what I want to do and how if we told and got everyone these opportunities more regularly we could get more people excited about these kinds of things. Since most people including me, liked their first experience volunteering and would jump at another chance or be interested in doing this again but don't know how to get a chance again, then everyone would volunteer if they could and we would all make the world a caring and sharing place, where everyone is fair and everyone has a chance to have what they require for living. The world would be at least a little bit more happier than it is now.

Othello

Shakespeare, credited to be the father of modern English and one of the most famous play writers ever to roam the earth. I read like the first couple of pages and I am confused greatly. I do not understand anything. He's known for the legacy that he created in the 1500′s. Every to date would probably know the famous plays of Othello, Hamlet, and of course Romeo and Juliet. These plays that have been watched and read for the past 500 years are something that people can look back onto to discover great plays that were once played for royalty. All these plays are something that can be known as a legacy that changed the world on what we see play writing as today.

1st: Re-make of Romeo & Juliet. Leo <3 2nd: Remake of the taming of the shrew 3rd: Hamlet, VERY famous play. Re-make dvd cover 4th: A photo of Shakespear 5th: Macbeth. VERY famous as well. Many legends of death around it. 6th: Othello ~ I've never heard of this play before. EVER.
When Mr. Sauer described that this play was going to be tough, I was like 'naaaaawh, i gots dis'. I wanted to read Romeo and Juliet! NO FAIR D: We have to read Othello D': Sauer'll make me cry. My first judgement was that this book was going to be amazingly boring. And it was pretty okay. It was interesting. The little short summary on the left of very page saved my butt because the way Shakespeare writes is very hard to analyze. When we started it in class it was very hard to understand the concept and language of the play hence the fact that it was written in the 1500′s.
Shakespeare's writing style was probably more easier to understand for people who existed during the times of the Renaissance because it differed greatly from the 21st century. Reading the first act, i thought the play was rather more interesting since Mr. Sauer had explained what important parts of the play and also he interpreted lets say Shakespeare language to the modern English language we use today.  We've only been through 2 acts of the book and they have been great but notas great as Mr. Sauer described. I really have different taste than him. Sorry Mr. Sauer D: I think you have horrible taste in books/plays. Although it has only been 2 acts, I feel bored reading it. I hope that this play would be more intriguing.
The characters in the play: Othello, Iago, Desdemona, Barbantio, Roderigo , and Michael Cassio. I just named the more participated  characters in the play so far. I can tell you about the personality that comes with each character, using the info I've read about it so far. Firstly, Othello, a gentlemen, can be smart and persuasive at the same time and he is a general so he gives others commands and duties. Iago, seeking revenge on Othello for not promoting him so he has a high temper but can control it and be smart and fool others. Desdemona, the wife of Othello and she hasn’t been a huge part of the play but I can tell she is too fond of Iago, then Barbantio who is the father of Desdemona and is probably the top dog, He's kinda like Othello's boss and practically the man that you do not question. Then there's Roderigo, in love with Desdemona however she doesn’t love him back, and lastly Michael Cassio, he was recruited by Othello over Iago. That's all I know for now! See you next time~

Wow. I really know nothing about this world.

Like usual, I read my friend’s slides as we worked at my house on our St. Rose MDG presentation. Everyday I blog things I've learned about. These things are usually not the best and they're about the world problems. There is A LOT of things that I don't know about this world. Like.....

Education, especially for girls, has social and economic benefits for society as a whole.
Educated women have more economic opportunities and engage more fully in public life, gaining the ability to speak out about abusive lives. Women who are educated tend to have fewer and healthier children, and they are more encouraged to finish schooling. Education also increases the ability of women and girls to protect themselves from the horrible disease, HIV.

More than 25 million people have died from AIDS since 1981.
Africa has over 14 million orphans whom are diagnosed with AIDS. The number of people living with HIV has risen from around 8 million in 1990 to 33 million today. In 20 years, the number has increased by 25 million. 67% of these people live in sub-Saharan Africa hiv aids in india. The number of people infected with HIV in India has declined drastically from 5.5 million in 2005 to below 2.5 million in 2007. The main cause for the high number of people whom were infected were low literacy rates and extensive labour migration, resulting in lack of awareness and gender disparity.Vanessa showed our group this youtube video: Make Poverty History – The Orphans of Nkandla. I showed this video to all my relatives. I send it over to recommend my foreign and cousins that are here, watch it. I really was sad. How the children were crying and they have no one left. This video was amazing. It showed the everyday hardships of the majority of people on Earth.

What time is it? Time to Panic.

Yeah you see that face up there? Underneath that face of happiness is a face of panic, of worry, of sorrow. The St. Rose presentation is tomorrow! Of course I wouldn't be this worried if I hadn't been reminded of the couple hundred students that were to be watching me tomorrow. ARGH! I've got butterflies D: I currently have 17 slides and my script still needs much to be edited. Ginelle, Monica, Shilah, Julie and Jessica came today. We all actually worked today. Everyone was done except for me. So i'm embarrassed. I haven't pulled my weight yet. I will complete by tonight though! I really am tired. IB STRESS. I'm looking forward to this but am scared at the same time. I have many saddening slides to present and have done a practice in front of my peers. They said it's still kinda sketchy, hopefully I finish in time. Wish me luck~

More things I've learned from the slides my fellow peers had completed!

A picture is worth a thousand words. With these photos. I think I could express a million words of what i feel. If i were in this situation-- i jus-- I don't even know what i'd do. Sometimes people need ocular proof. Just seeing this is so sad. I mean-- young children who barely know anything and even elder's are on the streets, i wonder if the photographers even do shit to help. The girl at the top whose begging for money. I guess other people also need to see things in person to believe. Because i used to just be like, oh, people are poor, so what? I've actually seen something like this in person. It;s just heartbreaking. I even remember the experience. It was my first trip to vietnam and I was eating outside with my family. My vietnam relatives. We were sitting outside because vietnam restaurants are stalls outside and these kids younger than me (I was about 7) were selling sweets and lottery tickets to people outside. Just anyone. I saw them get shunned by so much people and they were even pushed around. I asked my mom who and why they were doing this and she said 'This is what happens when you don't get an education. You have to do this on the streets."  I made my mom buy that kid out and she gladly did. But then we were swarmed by alot of kids who were also selling gum.

Most of these kids were crippled and so I asked my mom why didn't they look normal and she told me that people cripple children so that they have to work for them forever. So sad </3 I guess I only remembered this story because it was the first time I ever knew about unfortunate people and I was really affected by this story. But did I do anything to help? No. Not til now. I've never got this chance til now so I'll make sure to work to the best of my ability and I will work beyond this as well if I get the chance because honestly, without this project I think the most I would've done was donate. I never thought I could make a change. Mr. Alger talked to us about tank man today, about how one man can change the world and how one man stopped 4 tanks for a few minutes. He stood in front of 4 tanks. He stopped tanks that were loaded and all ready to attack. He represent China's people and he is proof that one man can change the world. I think this guy was foolish but brave, this was very significant though. Too bad we know nothing about this guy. Where he came from, who he was, everything about him. This guy inspires me to work hard even though he just stood in front of tanks after getting some groceries. I hope i'm as courageous as he is. And as passionate about things I care about as he is.
